The Denier Tournois

Minted during the turbulent reign of Philip IV of France (1285 – 1314), the Denier Tournios was one of the most recognized coins of the Western world. It was struck in the royal city of Tours, and its legend has both the king’s name and the name of Tours around the central images of the Cross Pattee and Castle surmounted by the Cross. The Cross Patee – with its flared arms – is associated with divine guardianship and the reach of God’s power.
 
To the commoners, merchants, traders and nobility the Denier Tournios was a very tangible sign of religious devotion in a chaotic world. It was in fact this small silver coin that linked markets, monasteries and castles across the realm. These coins quietly passed from hand to hand, and then were secreted away often in Pilgrim’s caches, as wars raged, leaders rose and fell, and life continued on. In fact, it is perhaps this endurance that is its true legacy, as a symbol of faith that protected and a strength that persevered, long after medieval France was only a memory.

Today, centuries later, the same Cross that once asserted royal legitimacy now speaks to personal resilience and steadfast courage. The few surviving Denier Tournois, like the one you see here, carries the marks of its long journey. And while its edges may be softened by time, it’s design is unbroken. A reminder that even in uncertain times, faith, endurance, and the will to persevere remain timeless.

What kind of coins did the Templar Knights use?

We are often asked this question, and it's a good one. The Knights Templar where formed to protect the pilgrims traveling back and forth between Europe and Jerusalem. Minted in France during the time of the Knights Templar, this type of coin most certainly would have been found in a Templar Knight's pouch as he protected the pilgrims on their journey.

Denier Tournios hoards are found along the crusader and pilgrims trails to the Holy Land. The coins in our collection were part of a hoard discovered near Jerusalem many years ago. They had been in a private collection until we acquired them. These coins were used by one of the crusading knights or pilgrims, and amazingly, they have survived to tell us their story.
