Before the Roman Empire, there was the Roman Republic… where ancient Rome was ruled by the powerful Senate and moneyers were responsible for creating the coins used by the citizens of this rising power.
This silver coin, a Denarius, was minted by moneyer L. Valerius Acisculus in 45 BC in Rome - while still considered a Republic issue, it was minted under the rule of Julius Caesar. On the Front (obverse) It pictures the head of Apollo. Apollo was the god of music and dance, truth and prophecy, healing and light. On the back (reverse) is a fascinating depiction of Europa astride a bull - more on this below.

April's Notes: Wow, where to start. Perhaps, first of all, here we see Roman history at a crossroads. While technically still a Republic issue, by the time this coin was minted, Caesar had declared himself dictator - and the Roman "Empire" was dawning. Second, while Apollo is featured here, we've set this coin to display Europa and the Bull as the main image. A rare issue, this coin has been interpreted in many ways by Roman coin scholars. Europa, the Greek goddess who gives Europe its name, is now believed to be the figure astride the bull.
In Greek mythology, Zeus was said to have fallen in love the the Phoenician princess Europa. He turned himself into a bull and convinced her to ride on his back... and then he promptly swam out to Crete, where he and Europa had several children. Some say this coin may be a nod to Queen Cleopatra of Egypt who came to Rome at Caesar's invitation, crossing the sea to join him.
(Please note: this information and much more will appear on your customized Certificate of Authenticity.)
Each ancient Roman coin was hand-struck by three people, and at the height of the Roman empire, coins were minted throughout the sprawling territories – even in military camps where coins were minted to pay soldiers. Lost or purposely hoarded, this ancient Roman Coin was discovered by metal detector and professionally conserved for a lifetime of enjoyment.
