Roman Republic Silver Denarius Serratus 81 BC Hispania and the Eagle Sterling Silver Pendant | Artifact #3547

Roman Republic Silver Denarius 81 BC Pendant with Hispania - the Personification of the Iberian Peninsula

Please Note: This is an authentic Ancient Roman Treasure Coin, and you will receive the exact pendant in the photographs and description.

SEE COIN DETAILS BELOW FOR PENDANT SIZE

Before the Roman Empire, there was the Roman Republic… where ancient Rome was ruled by the powerful Senate and moneyers were responsible for creating the coins used by the citizens of this rising power.

This silver coin, a Denarius, was minted by moneyer A. Postumius A.f. Sp.n. Albinusin 81 BC in Rome. It pictures the veiled head of Hispania - the personification of the Roman conquered lands of the Iberian peninsula. On the back (reverse) is a figure in a toga with a legionary eagle to the left and an axe to the right.

Our ancient coin pendants are a favorite of history fans, students, travel buffs and teachers… and anyone with a love of the past. Our Roman jewelry is designed to be worn by men or women will accommodate both large and small chain and leather necklaces.

Your Roman Treasure Coin Pendant

  • Denomination: Denarius Serratus (Serratus is the Latin root of our English word "Serrated." The edge of this coin was notched to assist in preventing the shaving of the edges by nefarious persons.)
  • Moneyer: A. Postumius A.f. Sp.n. Albinus
  • Date & Mint: 81 BC, Rome
  • Coin Metal: Silver
  • Bezel Metal: Proprietary, Non-Tarnishing Sterling Silver
  • Articulating Bail Interior Diameter: Will accommodate chain or leather necklace up to 6.2 mm
  • Coin Obverse: The veiled head of Hispania - the personification of the Roman conquered lands of the Iberian peninsula
  • Coin Reverse: Figure in a toga with a legionary eagle to the left and an axe to the right
  • Size Including Bezel Setting: 3/4" Across, 1 1/2" Tall - about the width of  a U.S. Nickel

April's Notes: Serrated Denarii are some of my favorites. Called a Serratus, the edges were notched so that anyone who took this coin in payment could tell if some sneaky (I like the term nefarious) individual had shaved some of the silver off the edge! It is the early form of the serrated edges on modern coins like the U.S. dime and quarter.

This coin relates to the ancestor of the moneyer - the man responsible for the mint and coin production at the time. His ancestry led a successful expedition against the Vaccaei - what we now call the Basque people. Celebrating the feats of bravery of your ancestors was common and valued in the Roman Republic, where family status played a key role in success.

Perhaps best of all, it is what we call almost "zero die axis." When these coins were struck, the minters didn't care if the top of one side of the coin was also the top on the other side - what we call "Medallic Orientation." This coin is one of the rare ones you can wear it either side out.

(Please note: this information and much more will appear on your customized Certificate of Authenticity.)

Each ancient Roman coin was hand-struck by three people, and at the height of the Roman empire, coins were minted throughout the sprawling territories – even in military camps where coins were minted to pay soldiers. Lost or purposely hoarded, this ancient Roman Coin was discovered by metal detector and professionally conserved for a lifetime of enjoyment.
