Before the Roman Empire, there was the Roman Republic… where ancient Rome was ruled by the powerful Senate and moneyers were responsible for creating the coins used by the citizens of this rising power.

This silver coin, a Denarius, was minted by an anonymous moneyer in 211 - 208 BC in Rome. It pictures the laureate head of Jupiter. Jupiter was the master god and the god of sky and thunder. On the back (reverse) is Victory, the goddess of victory in battle and over death, crowning a trophy with ROMA below.

April's Notes: This is quite an early issue, and quite striking too, with good detail in both Jupiter and Victory - her wings are wonderful. 

And it is always wonderful to see a clear "ROMA" as most Republic denarii don't have this legend. An all over pleasing example.
