Before the Roman Empire, there was the Roman Republic… where ancient Rome was ruled by the powerful Senate and moneyers were responsible for creating the coins used by the citizens of this rising power.

This silver coin, a Denarius, was minted in Rome in 88 BC by moneyer Cn. Cornelius Lentulus Clodianus. It pictures Mars wearing a Corinthian helmet on the front (obverse). Mars is the god of war and the guardian of agriculture. On the back (reverse) is Victory, the goddess of victory in battle and over death, driving a biga (sporty two horse chariot).
