Before the Roman Empire, there was the Roman Republic… where ancient Rome was ruled by the powerful Senate and moneyers were responsible for creating the coins used by the citizens of this rising power.

This silver coin, a Denarius, was minted in in Rome in 86 BC by an anonymous moneyer.  It pictures the laureate head of Apollo on the front (obverse). Apollo was the god of music and dance, truth and prophecy, healing and light. On the back (reverse) is Jupiter - the master god of sky and thunder - driving a quadriga (a four-horse chariot).
