Before the Roman Empire, there was the Roman Republic… where ancient Rome was ruled by the powerful Senate and moneyers were responsible for creating the coins used by the citizens of this rising power.

This silver coin, a Denarius, was minted by moneyer L. Julius Bursio in 85 BC in Rome. On the Front (obverse) It pictures the laureate, winged head of Apollo with his trident. Apollo was the god of music and dance, truth and prophecy, healing and light. On the back (reverse) is Victory, the goddess of victory in battle and over death, driving a quadriga (a four-horse chariot).
