Before the Roman Empire, there was the Roman Republic… where ancient Rome was ruled by the powerful Senate and moneyers were responsible for creating the coins used by the citizens of this rising power.

This silver coin, a Denarius, was minted in Rome in 78 BC by moneyer M Volteius M f. It pictures Attis on the front (obverse). Attis is the god of rebirth. On the back (reverse), is Cybele. Romans knew Cybele as Magna Mater ("Great Mother"), a goddess who became a protector of Rome. She is pictured here seated in a chariot drawn by lions.

Our ancient coin pendants are a favorite of history fans, students, travel buffs and teachers… and anyone with a love of the past. Our Roman jewelry is designed to be worn by men or women will accommodate both large and small chain and leather necklaces.

April's Notes: This is a rare, and significant Denarius. Pictured here is Attis on the obverse. Attis is the beautiful god of vegetation, agriculture, and rebirth. As the devoted consort of the Great Mother goddess Cybele, his myth symbolizes the cyclical death of nature in winter and its rebirth in the spring.

Not many Roman Republican coins feature Cybele - the symbol of motherhood. Here, she sits in a chariot pulled by lions - a fitting tribute to the great mother goddess.

This coin is a classic example of early Roman coinage. It was passed through countless hands - Roman soldiers and citizens whose lives live on through their coins.

Note the “Banker’s Mark” circled in red. This mark was made by a banker or merchant who was testing to see if the coin was counterfeit - just copper, with a thin silver wash. They took a small tool and hammered it into the coin to see if the metal below the surface was also silver. It was. Just another day in the Roman Republic!

(Please note: this information and much more will appear on your customized Certificate of Authenticity.)

Each ancient Roman coin was hand-struck by three people, and at the height of the Roman empire, coins were minted throughout the sprawling territories – even in military camps where coins were minted to pay soldiers. Lost or purposely hoarded, this ancient Roman Coin was discovered by metal detector and professionally conserved for a lifetime of enjoyment.
