Before the Roman Empire, there was the Roman Republic… where ancient Rome was ruled by the powerful Senate and moneyers were responsible for creating the coins used by the citizens of this rising power.

This silver coin, a Denarius, was minted by moneyer M. Plaetorius in 67 BC. It pictures the winged bust of Vacuna wearing a crested helmet on the front (obverse). Vacuna was an ancient Sabine goddess and is associated with protection of absent family and friends. On the back (reverse) is the regal Roman eagle on a thunderbolt.
