Before the Roman Empire, there was the Roman Republic… where ancient Rome was ruled by the powerful Senate and moneyers were responsible for creating the coins used by the citizens of this rising power.
This silver coin, a Denarius, was minted by moneyer Manius Acillius Glabrio in 49 BC in Rome. On the front (obverse) it pictures the laureate head of Salus. Salas was the goddess of safety, well-being, welfare, health and prosperity. On the back (reverse) is Salus leaning against a column holding a snake.
Our ancient coin pendants are a favorite of history fans, students, travel buffs and teachers… and anyone with a love of the past. Our Roman jewelry is designed to be worn by men or women will accommodate both large and small chain and leather necklaces.

April's Notes: This Denarius is one of the legendary "snake" issues. On the obverse is Salus, the goddess of safety, well-being, welfare, health and prosperity. And, on the reverse she is pictured holding a snake while leaning against a column.
Snakes were revered by the Romans, and represented healing, powerful protection, and rebirth. Just as the caduceus (the symbol for the medical profession) features two coiled snakes around a central staff - an ancient symbol said by the Greeks to be carried by Hermes. The Romans depicted Mercury, the messenger of the gods, carrying the same staff.
Note the “Banker’s Mark” circled in red. This mark was made by a banker or merchant who was testing to see if the coin was counterfeit - just copper, with a thin silver wash. They took a small tool and hammered it into the coin to see if the metal below the surface was also silver. It was. Just another day in the Roman Republic!
Each ancient Roman coin was hand-struck by three people, and at the height of the Roman empire, coins were minted throughout the sprawling territories – even in military camps where coins were minted to pay soldiers. Lost or purposely hoarded, this ancient Roman Coin was discovered by metal detector and professionally conserved for a lifetime of enjoyment.
