Before the Roman Empire, there was the Roman Republic… where ancient Rome was ruled by the powerful Senate and moneyers were responsible for creating the coins used by the citizens of this rising power.

This silver coin, a Denarius, was minted in Rome in 42 BC by moneyer P. Clodius M.f. Turrinus. It pictures Apollo with a lyre on the front (obverse). Apollo was the god of music and dance, truth and prophecy, healing and light. On the back (reverse) is Diana, the goddess of the hunt, the moon, and nature, who could talk to animals, holding a flaming torch in each hand.

April's Notes: This Denarius features the mighty and fascinating Apollo on one side, and Diana on the other. Apollo was said to inspire wisdom and insight... especially on the battlefield. 

Here also, regal Diana has her bow and quiver over her shoulder, and holds lighted torches in each hand. The detail is clear and the balanced strike makes for wonderful portrayal of Diana.

Perhaps best of all, it is what we call "zero die axis." When these coins were struck, the minters didn't care if the top of one side of the coin was also the top on the other side - what we call "Medallic Orientation." This coin is one of the rare ones you can wear it either side out.
