Before the Roman Empire, there was the Roman Republic… where ancient Rome was ruled by the powerful Senate and moneyers were responsible for creating the coins used by the citizens of this rising power.

This silver coin, a Denarius, was minted in Rome in 122 BC by moneyer Quintus Minucius. It pictures the helmeted Roma on the front (obverse). Roma was the personification – the representation - of the city of Rome. On the back (reverse) are the Dioscuri, or Gemini Twins, the patrons of sailors and horsemanship, astride their horses, galloping.
