Before the Roman Empire, there was the Roman Republic… where ancient Rome was ruled by the powerful Senate and moneyers were responsible for creating the coins used by the citizens of this rising power.

This silver coin, a Denarius, was minted in Rome in 140 BC by moneyer C. Valerius C.f. Flaccus. It pictures the helmeted Roma on the front (obverse). Roma was the personification – the representation - of the city of Rome. On the back (reverse) is Victory, the goddess of victory in battle and over death, driving a biga (a sporty, two horse chariot).

April's Notes: This coin is a classic example of early Roman coinage. It was passed through countless hands - Roman soldiers and citizens whose lives live on through their coins.

Note the “Banker’s Mark” circled in red. This mark was made by a banker or merchant who was testing to see if the coin was counterfeit - just copper, with a thin silver wash. They took a small tool and hammered it into the coin to see if the metal below the surface was also silver. It was. Just another day in the Roman Republic!
