Before the Roman Empire, there was the Roman Republic… where ancient Rome was ruled by the powerful Senate and moneyers were responsible for creating the coins used by the citizens of this rising power.

This silver coin, a Denarius, was minted by moneyer Q. Caecilius Metellus in 130 BC in Rome. It pictures the helmeted Roma on the front (obverse). Roma was the personification – the representation of the city of Rome, where this coin was minted. On the back (reverse) is Jupiter, the master god and the god of sky and thunder, driving a quadriga (a four-horse chariot) holding a palm frond and thunderbolt, with ROMA below.
