Before the Roman Empire, there was the Roman Republic… where ancient Rome was ruled by the powerful Senate and moneyers were responsible for creating the coins used by the citizens of this rising power.

This silver coin, a Denarius, was minted in Rome in 114 BC by moneyer Mn. Aemelius Lepidus. It pictures the bare-headed Roma on the front (obverse). Roma was the personification – the representation - of the city of Rome, with a  stylized "ROMA" on the right. On the back (reverse) is a regal equestrian statue above three arches.

April's Notes: This Denarius is quite rare... almost all depictions of Roma on Republican coinage picture her with a winged helmet. But this lovey portrait showcases a beautiful and intricate hairstyle and straight, regal silhouette. To her right is a stylized ROMA - a great example of the coin minter's art.

The reverse is also rare - a poised equestrian statue above arches encapsulates the power of the Roman Republic on the rise.
