Before the Roman Empire, there was the Roman Republic… where ancient Rome was ruled by the powerful Senate and moneyers were responsible for creating the coins used by the citizens of this rising power.

This silver coin, a Denaruis, was minted by moneyer L. Sentius C.f. in Rome in 101 BC. It pictures the helmeted Roma on the front (obverse). Roma was the personification – the representation - of the city of Rome. On the back (reverse) is Jupiter, the master god and the god of sky and thunder, driving a quadriga (a four-horse chariot) holding a scepter and thunderbolt.
