Size Including Bezel Setting: 1" Across, 1 1/2" Tall - about the width of a U.S. Quarter

Of Special Note: This rare ancient Roman Quadrigatus - a particularly rare issue and denomination - that pictures Janus. The god Janus held a unique position in ancient Roman myth - it is he who presided over change - he was the master of all beginnings, transitions and endings - the master of time. He is depicted with two faces: he looks to the future with the widsom gained from the past. Janus sparks action and the change that comes with it. For anyone on a journey, Janus can be an inspired companion. SEE APRIL'S NOTES BELOW

Before the Roman Empire, there was the Roman Republic… where ancient Rome was ruled by the powerful Senate and moneyers were responsible for creating the coins used by the citizens of this rising power.

This silver coin, a Quadrigatus, was minted by an anonymous moneyer between 225 - 214 BC. It pictures the Janus on the front (obverse). Janus is the god of beginnings, gates, transitions, time, change, passages and endings. He looks to the future with the wisdom gained from the past. On the back (reverse) is Jupiter, holding scepter and thunderbolt, in quadriga driven by Victory

Our ancient coin pendants are a favorite of history fans, students, travel buffs and teachers… and anyone with a love of the past. Our Roman jewelry is designed to be worn by men or women will accommodate both large and small chain and leather necklaces.

April's Notes: SHEAR PERFECTION! Stunning... just stunning. It is incredibly rare for us to offer a Janus coin with such a centered portrait and detail.

This is one amazing ancient artifact! This is one of the most storied coins of the early Roman Republic—the famed Janus issue, bearing the twin faces of the god who stands at every threshold: beginnings and endings, past and future, all held in a single gaze.

Each face looks its own way—one to the past, one to the future. The “single gaze” isn’t about eyesight, but awareness. It reflects a deeper truth: that transition requires both memory and anticipation at once. You don’t move forward by forgetting what came before—you carry it with you, even as you step into something new.

Struck in the earliest days of Rome’s rise, this is an exceptionally rare example of the Quadrigatus - a denomination that predates and exceeds the familiar Denarius in both size and presence. Coins of this caliber seldom pass through our hands, and even more rarely with portraits rendered this beautifully - each face carrying that quiet, enigmatic expression that has captivated collectors for centuries.

There is something especially fitting about Janus appearing on such an early coin. He is, after all, the guardian of transitions—and this piece belongs to that very moment when Rome itself was becoming something greater than it had been before.

Each ancient Roman coin was hand-struck by three people, and at the height of the Roman empire, coins were minted throughout the sprawling territories – even in military camps where coins were minted to pay soldiers. Lost or purposely hoarded, this ancient Roman Coin was discovered by metal detector and professionally conserved for a lifetime of enjoyment.
