When we think of the treasure coins of pirate legend and lore, the first thing that comes to mind is the gold “doubloon.” Doubloons, or Escudos (which means shield in Spanish), are the gold coins to satiate desire. From kings and queens, to merchants, adventurers, and yes, pirates and privateers, the gold Escudos, along with their counter parts, silver “Pieces of 8,” fueled the world economy for some 300 years.
Next time you read about the great pirates of long ago; Henry Morgan, Edward Teach (Blackbeard), John Rackham (Calico Jack), Mary Read, Anne Bonny and many others, these were the coins that drove their raiding and pillaging of land and sea! Even the great, and often maligned, “pirate hunter” Captain William Kidd used these coins to purchase rum and wine for his crew.
Crudely minted "cob" coins - short for cabo de barra, or "end of the bar," each has its own unique shape. Hand-hammered, these 22K gold (24K is pure gold) pieces of history are some of the most intriguing and beautiful coins ever minted. And because each coin was minted by hand, they are one of a kind. Unlike a machine-minted coin, it is impossible for anyone else to possess a coin exactly like yours!

Note from Robert: Excellent, almost uncirculated, with a full cross, an excellent shield, and remarkably strong detail on both sides. This is one of the rarest and most beautiful coins I have had the honor of working with—a remarkable piece of history to find in a pendant. It is as close to museum grade as you can get in a pendant.
Struck at the rare Cartagena, Colombia mint, it bears the “C” mintmark and the “E” of assayer Juan de la Era. Together with the distinctive design details, these marks allow me to attribute the coin to 1631. The date itself falls beyond the edge of the planchet, as it does on so many coins of this type.
The royal shield design elements indicate the King’s realm: Castile and Leon; Jerusalem and Navarre; Aragon and Sicily, Granada. Its beautifully preserved details, paired with the bold cross on the opposite side, make this a piece worth examining closely—and appreciating from either side.
This coin survived the arduous journey across the Atlantic aboard a Spanish galleon bound for Spain. Its remarkable preservation suggests that it spent much of the intervening time safely beyond the reach of everyday circulation; lost or hidden, waiting to be found.
Minted in Colombia and discovered centuries later in Spain, this coin connects two continents and nearly four hundred years of history. If this coin could talk.
For a coin of this caliber, we create our luxury 18K gold bezel that gives the pendant a regal presence and a satisfying weight. The rich, warm color of the gold beautifully complements the historic coin.
Our extensive documentation package accompanies this treasure, including photographs, identification details, and the history behind this exceptional piece.
