One of the most famed treasure fleets of all time, the 1715 Spanish Treasure Fleet yields some of the most stunning examples of early 1700's silver Spanish "cob" shipwreck treasure coins.
Crudely minted cob coins - short for cabo de barra, or "from the end of the bar," each has it's own unique shape - and combined with the sea wear and stunning patinas, each is a small work of art!
The Golden Age of Piracy - 1650-1730
What connection does the 1715 Fleet have to Pirates: These "pieces of 8" are also the famous coins of pirate legend and lore. The Spanish quickly began salvaging their fleet. But pirates Henry Jennings, and Charles Vane, amassed a crew and attacked the Spanish salvage camp on December 28, 1715. They made off with upwards of 350,000 pieces of 8. Obviously, this coin survived that raid, and lay hidden for hundreds of years on the ocean bottom, to be salvaged only a few years ago.
The pirate Blackbeard was also prowling the Florida coast and Caribbean at this time and drinking rum with Jennings and Vane! It's fascinating to consider that Blackbeard was sailing by, and attacking ships, just a few miles from the wreckage of "The Fleet," which stretched for over 30 miles along the Florida coast.

Note from Robert: STUNNING! Beautiful cross, nice thick piece. It's very difficult to acquire pieces of the Grade 1 quality these days. There are several things that make pieces like these unique and rare.
It comes with its original, sealed Mel Fisher Cobb Coin Company Certificate of Authenticity certified June, 2, 1986 (my birthday!), during the "Glory Days of the 1715 Fleet." Mel Fisher and his crew had just discovered the Atocha off Key West after searching for 16 long years.
This is true Treasure Hunter memorabilia - rare and valuable.
We can tell from the shield that the coin was struck in Mexico City, after the mint changed the Philip V shield design slightly in 1714.
We treasure hunters affectionately call this size of coin a "Key West Dog Tag." You will most certainly turn heads when you sidle (if there is no horse, it's sidle) up to an oyster bar.
Additional Coin and Certificate details: Shipwreck 8 reales in this Grade 1 condition are rarer these days - these coins are at the mercy of the ocean unless they are protected either in a conglomerate ("clump") of coins that was once a treasure chest, or attached to an "EO" Encrusted Object usually containing iron objects that were part of the ship's fittings, and act as a sacrificial metal, protecting the coin from the harsh salt and heavy wave action environment.
Someone long ago believed in the magic and mystery of treasure salvage, and this was part of their return for their monetary investment probably for the 1715 Fleet treasure hunting season the previous summer.
True 1715 Fleet treasure hunter memorabilia. These notes will be kept with your detailed documentation package we provide, so its provenance isn't lost to time.
