When we think of the treasure coins of pirate lore, the silver Spanish colonial coins of Central and South America immediately come to mind. Next time you read about the great pirates of long ago, Henry Morgan, Edward Teach (Blackbeard), John Rackham (Calico Jack), Mary Read, Anne Bonny and many others, these were the coins that drove their raiding and pillaging of land and sea! Even the great, and often maligned, “pirate hunter” Captain William Kidd used these coins to purchase rum and wine for his crew.
What is a Rare Spanish Pillar Dollar?
Rare by definition, the Spanish "Pillar Dollar" style coin is considered by numismatists (including us here at Cannon Beach Treasure Company) to be one of the most stunning coins ever minted.
For almost 300 years, the Spanish minted silver "pieces of eight" in their New World colonies. The "Pillar Dollar" was a transitional currency minted for only 40 years (1732-1772) between the irregular hand-hammered "Cob" style Pieces of Eight, and the later "Portrait Dollars" featuring a portrait of the King of Spain.
This regal design bears Spain's motto, the Pillars of Hercules, with a crown and the Old and New Worlds between them, and the waves of the Atlantic Ocean below. Around the edge is the Latin legend VTRA QUE VNUM: "Two Become One." The Latin legend on the ribbons around the Pillars reads PLVS VLTRA, meaning More Beyond the Pillars of Hercules.
