Atocha is the most famous Spanish galleon in shipwreck history! Mel Fisher spent 16 years searching for her... and every day he would tell his divers: “Today’s the Day!”  Years of trials and heartbreak were endured, along with attacks by the State and Federal government, who wanted to claim what Fisher found along the way.  At last, one fateful morning in 1985 he hit the “mother load...” millions upon millions in glittering Spanish silver and gold!

BAG MARKS! But what is the most COOL is the canvas cross-hatch "bag marks" on the shield side! After the coins were struck at the Potosi mint at 10,000+ feet, they were put in heavy canvas bags and took two weeks carried by llama and mule pack trains down to Arica and her Pacific port for transport north to Panama. When the bag holding this coin was later loaded into the wooden "treasure chest" chest for transport to Spain, the shield side of this coin was facing out and pressed against the wood of the chest. After nearly 400 years underwater, some of the chests were still intact with the coins in large "clumps" in them. The cloth bag had rotted away, but the natural concretion had etched "bag marks" into the silver on the coin!

I have handled thousands of treasure coins over the years and far less than one percent have had bag marks.

This coin won't last too long before being "adopted."

Sweet visible Q assayer's initials. We know from the assayer's initials the coin was struck between 1612-1616.

Excellent deeply struck, centered cross. Partial (PHILIPVS) III D.G. HISPANA, Latin for Philip III (Dei Gracia) By the Grace of God, King of Spain and the Indies. We normally don't see all that detail on a single coin. Nice thicker planchet. The piece is stunning in hand.

  1. Beautiful full cross and shield detail.
  2. Nice thick planchet. This piece is stunning in hand.
  3. Some sea wear... this coin was gently removed from the side of the remains of a treasure chest.
  4. Rare and very collectable, 1986 motherlode discovery original investor's payout Certificate of Authenticity. With its historic, original first issued official corporate seal embossed Treasure Salvor's, Inc certificate and flip insert issued in 1987. The Certificate is what we call "treasure hunter memorabilia."
  5. This is one of the finest Atocha pieces available.

We treasure hunters call pieces like these "Key West Dog Tags." Sidle (if there's no horse, it's sidle) up to an oyster bar and you will turn heads!

Having worked with Atocha "Golden Crew" members for decades (those who stuck with Mel through thick and thin until they hit the "mother lode"), when the rum is flowing, stories of the "good ol' days" in Key West surface.

It brings back fond memories for me when I work with one of these coins. I remember living and diving for treasure in the Upper Keys back then. First, the discovery of the mother lode, and then the massive undertaking of conserving, grading and certifying a galleon-full of treasures. It was a crazy time. It’s one more fascinating reflection of a magical time in this treasure’s history.

This coin comes with its original, historic Treasure Salvor's, Inc., raised seal Certificate issued in 1986.

Long before Mel Fisher and his dedicated crew "hit the motherlode," someone believed in Fisher and the magic and mystery of searching for a lost Spanish galleon. When the Atocha was discovered, Fisher gave this coin and others to that investor as part of their return on investment. It has been safe-guarded in a safe deposit box since it was issued.

All of this info will be included with our extensive documentation package that come with your pendant so ytou can share this amazing story.
