When we think of the treasure coins of pirate legend and lore, the first thing that comes to mind is the gold “doubloon.” Doubloons, or Escudos (which means shield in Spanish), are the gold coins to satiate desire. From kings and queens, to merchants, adventurers, and yes, pirates and privateers, the gold Escudos, along with their counter parts, silver “Pieces of 8,” fueled the world economy for some 300 years.
Next time you read about the great pirates of long ago; Henry Morgan, Edward Teach (Blackbeard), John Rackham (Calico Jack), Mary Read, Anne Bonny and many others, these were the coins that drove their raiding and pillaging of land and sea! Even the great, and often maligned, “pirate hunter” Captain William Kidd used these coins to purchase rum and wine for his crew.
Handcrafted “cob” coins—whose name is often traced to cabo de barra, or “end of the bar”—each have their own distinctive shape and character. Hand-hammered in 22K gold (24K is pure gold), these pieces of history are among the most intriguing and beautiful coins ever minted. Each bears the individual touch of the mint workers who shaped and struck it. Its outline, design, and hammer impressions make it truly one of a kind—a piece of the past that no one else can possess exactly like yours.

Note from Robert: Excellent an unique, deeply struck, one-of-a-kind specimen.
There are several things that stand out about and make this coin very unique:
Partially visible date. The distinctive shield and cross design details, and the partially visible bottom edge of the date, it allows me to attribute the coin to 1593.
One of my favorite features of this beautiful gold coin is its distinctive pebbled texture, imparted by the weathered steel die used to strike it. With the hammer’s blow, the gold captured the die’s surface character along with the bold cross, preserving a fascinating detail of its creation.
For me, this offers a wonderful glimpse inside a working Spanish mint. The craftsmen who struck these coins faced familiar challenges: tools to maintain, materials to work, and the effects of moisture on steel. Centuries later, this coin brings that human connection into focus. Its richly textured surface catches the light beautifully—a little of the mint’s working life, preserved in gold.
INTERESTING HISTORIC NOTE: This two-escudo gold coin weighs 4.6 grams. The official weight of a two escudo is 6.7 to 6.8 grams. For this 4.6 gram coin, its edges have been trimmed while preserving its overall shape and remarkable detail. Why someone removed that gold is lost to time. Was it "clipped" to deceive someone, or since gold had intrinsic value even not in coin form, was it done on purpose with no intent to deceive?
While we will never know the circumstances, this alteration adds a fascinating human question to the coin’s history: who kept the missing gold, and what happened when this piece next changed hands?
Our extensive documentation package accompanies this treasure, including photographs, identification details, and the history behind this exceptional piece.
