Before the Roman Empire, there was the Roman Republic… where ancient Rome was ruled by the powerful Senate and moneyers were responsible for creating the coins used by the citizens of this rising power.

This silver coin, a Denarius, was minted by moneyer L. Cassius Q.f. Longinus
 in 78 BC in Rome. It pictures Liber on the front (obverse) wearing an ivy wreath. Liber was the god of wine, freedom and fertility. On the back (reverse) is a Libera, Liber's female counterpart, the goddess of fertility and cultivation.

April's Notes: A rare and interesting Denarius, this one features the male and female counterparts Liber and Libera. These paired gods were closely associated with agriculture and the cultivation of wine. Add to that freedom and fertility and you can see their connection to Bacchus of Ancient Greece and the central role wine played in Roman agriculture.

Perhaps best of all, it is what we call "zero die axis." When these coins were struck, the minters didn't care if the top of one side of the coin was also the top on the other side - what we call "Medallic Orientation." This coin is one of the rare ones you can wear it either side out.
