One of the most famed treasure fleets of all time, the 1715 Spanish Treasure Fleet yields some of the most stunning examples of early 1700's gold Spanish "cob" shipwreck treasure coins.
Robert has decided to release one of his "sweetie pies" as he calls them; a stunning and rare Bogota, Columbia, 1 escudo gold doubloon recovered just two years and a few days before the 300 year anniversary of the sinking of the 1715 Fleet . It's hard to get a more unique and perfect gold shipwreck coin. Add to that, it was recovered within 2 years and a few days of July 31, 2015... the Tricentennial of the sinking of the Fleet on July 31, 1715.
Pedigree:
The discovery location of most of the 1715 Fleet coins have been lost to time ever since the Fleet started to be worked in the early 1960s.
For this coin, we know the exact site (Corrigans), and the exact date, and who found it.
After persevering, and searching the ocean bottom for years where the 1715 Fleet met its fate, the crew of S/V Capitana struck gold! The date was July 17, 2013. In a small crack in the cocuina (limestone or broken shell bedrock), they discovered a stunning 51 one escudo coins. One escudo coins are VERY rare to find on the 1715 Fleet, let alone 51 of them. The coin were struck under both Charles II (1665-1700) and Philip V (1700-1746), and were produced at the Mexico City, Colombia and Peru mints.
This coin is part of what is known as the "2013 One Escudo Pile" and is certified by Queens Jewels, the company that owned the lease from the State of Florida at that time. The story was reported world wide.
According to the State of Florida Research Coin Collection, most escudo gold cobs ("doubloons") recovered from the 1715 Fleet were minted in Mexico City, Mexico. Less than 8% of the gold coins in their collection were minted in Bogota, Colombia (like this coin). To make the 1 escudo listed here even more rare, of that 8% from Colombia, 88% of them were the 2 escudos. Only 12% were the 1 escudos like this coin.
This is in the top 1% of what is available in the world! I set it in a luxury width and weight 18K gold bezel. It has a stunning, deep strike, completely uncirculated.

What does Real or Escudo mean?
Real means "Royal" in Spanish and denoted SILVER coins - "piece of 8" is a nickname for the Spanish 8 real (reale, or plural, reales), or its smaller denominations as they were often cut down into smaller sizes to make change. Reales were minted in 1/4, 1/2, 1, 2, 4, and 8 real denominations.
Escudo means "Shield" in Spanish and denoted GOLD coins - "doubloon" is the nickname for the 2 escudo, or in Spanish doblon back then. Today, we often refer to all Spanish colonial gold coins as "doubloons" until we need to get specific about the denomination. Escudos at this time were minted in 1, 2, 4 and 8 escudos.
