Before the Roman Empire, there was the Roman Republic… where ancient Rome was ruled by the powerful Senate and moneyers were responsible for creating the coins used by the citizens of this rising power.
This silver coin, a Denaruis, was minted under Gnaeus Cornelius Lentulus Marcellinus in 76 - 75 BC in Spain. It pictures Genius Populi Romani on the front (obverse). "Genius" is the divine nature of each person, present in every person. Like a guardian angel, Genius would safeguard each person from birth to death. This coin features Genius Populi Romani - the Genius of the Roman people - as families, groups, cities, and here, the people of the Republic, were held to have a collective Genius. On the back (reverse) is a scepter, wreath, globe and rudder.

April's Notes: This is the first time we have ever been able to present this Denarius. It is rare for many reasons, not the least of which is that it was one of the first coins struck in Roman Spain. This coin was minted under a proconsul to Pompey - yes, Pompey the Great. with the symbols of the power and triumph of Rome on the reverse, it is an amazing survivor of an amazing age. There are a few light scratched under Genius' chin. Most likely these were made to ensure that the coin was solid silver... not a silver wash over a copper or base metal core. It is a testament to the hand of the Roman citizens this coin traveled through.
