Before the Roman Empire, there was the Roman Republic… where ancient Rome was ruled by the powerful Senate and moneyers were responsible for creating the coins used by the citizens of this rising power.

This silver coin, a Denaruis, was minted in in Rome in 48 BC by moneyer Albinus Bruti f. It pictures the bust of Pietas on the front (obverse). Pietas was the the personification of duty, loyalty, devotion and piety. On the back (reverse) are clasped hands holding winged caduceus.

April's Notes: A rare issue - stunning Pietas is strong and centered, and the clasped hands holding a winged caduceus ate also center struck. Perhaps the perfect treasure coin for a medial professional and history lover! Perhaps best of all, it is what we call almost "zero die axis." When these coins were struck, the minters didn't care if the top of one side of the coin was also the top on the other side - what we call "Medallic Orientation." This coin is one of the rare ones you can wear it either side out.
