Before the Roman Empire, there was the Roman Republic… where ancient Rome was ruled by the powerful Senate and moneyers were responsible for creating the coins used by the citizens of this rising power.

This silver coin, a Denarius, was minted by moneyer L. Papius in 79 BC in Rome. It pictures Juno - the queen of the gods and protector of Rome, wearing a goat skin. On the back (reverse) is a powerful, enigmatic Griffin - a mythological a creature with a lion's body and an eagle's head and wings. the Griffin symbolizes power, protection, and is often depicted guarding treasures or wealth... and was said to lay golden eggs!

There is a particularly well-centered Griffin here - and it's rare to see them on Republican Denarii. Strong and powerful, the Griffin was a potent symbol of protection and wealth - that yes, was said to lay golden eggs. 

Perhaps best of all, it is what we call "zero die axis." When these coins were struck, the minters didn't care if the top of one side of the coin was also the top on the other side - what we call "Medallic Orientation." This coin is one of the rare ones you can wear it either side out.
