When we think of the treasure coins of pirate lore, the silver Spanish colonial coins of Central and South America immediately come to mind. Next time you read about the great pirates of long ago, Henry Morgan, Edward Teach (Blackbeard, 1716-1718), John Rackham (Calico Jack), Mary Read, Anne Bonny and many others, these were the coins that drove their raiding and pillaging of land and sea! Even the great, and often maligned, “pirate hunter” Captain William Kidd used these coins to purchase rum and wine for his crew.

Crudely shaped and hand-hammered, these silver pieces of history are some of the most intriguing and beautiful coins ever minted. And because each coin was minted by hand, they are one of a kind. Unlike a machine minted coin, it is impossible for anyone else to posses a coin exactly like yours!

• Size including bezel: 1 5/8" Across, 2 3/8 Tall - the diameter of a silver dollar. Amazing size for a pirate queen or king. 

Robert's Notes: This coin is virtually uncirculated, with a nice cross and shield. Nice thick piece of 8. One the cross side you can see where the silver was sort of "folded" onto the coin when it was minted. Really cool! I have never seen a piece like this one. "M" Mexico City mint mark.

Judging from the design on the shield, this coin was very likely in circulation during the time of Blackbeard the Pirate.

The joy of this type of Real is the thick and strongly angled, each detail is highlighted in the gleam of silver. And this one was barely circulated before it was secreted away for hundreds of years.  

Us treasure hunters affectionately call this size of coin a "Key West Dog Tag." Perfect to wear when you sidle (if there is no horse, it's sidle) up to an oyster bar.
