Portraying one of the most famed, and mysterious, of ancient symbols - the Triskeles - the Lycian Dynasts 1/3 Silver Stater is an ambassador of the ancient world. An ambassador that witnessed some of the most legendary years of human history… and some of the most turbulent.

Ancient Lycia was located in what is now modern-day southwestern Turkey.  Located in the ancient region of Anatolia – what we now sometimes call Asia Minor. With its prime position on the Mediterranean Sea Lycia rose to prominence and prosperity. And, it minted these coins - some of the world's earliest - bearing the image of a Lion, their own Lycian language, and, most striking - the ancient Triskeles... a symbol as evocative then as it is now.

More on Lycian 1/3 Staters...

On one side of your 1/3 Stater is the scalp of a Lion. Lions were a symbol of power, strength and courage. It is possible that this lion was a reference to the mighty feat of Hercules in conquering the Nemean Lion. By picturing and associating yourself with this symbol, it was believed you would take on the power, strength and courage of a lion – and it may be this belief that led the Lycians to use this symbol.

The Triskeles

The Triskeles symbol is ancient – 4000s BC ancient. However, no one is quite sure what this symbol originally meant. But the symbol itself has led to a few theories that may be born out by its association with other ancient symbols.

Linked to the moon, ears of corn and the eagle, the Triskeles may be a symbol of the ancient triplet of earth, sky and the divine. Its rotational shape may be a reference to the ever rising and setting, and life-giving, sun.

Or, it could speak of the uniting of the elements of water, earth and sky that create the world of today as well as the ancients.

However, it may be a combination of all of these – a powerful symbol of elements, harmony, the divine and the eternal rotation of seasons, life, death and rebirth.

A note on Triskeles in the Celtic and Modern Worlds

The Triskeles of the ancient world is now familiar to the modern world through the art of the Celts. First appearing in Ireland in 3200 BC, the delicate spirals and swirls have been, and are still, a part of Celtic art to this day. Adopted as a Christian symbol when the Celts were converted to Christianity, the Triskeles now serves as a symbol of the Godhead – Father, Son and Holy Spirit. It is a beautiful example of an ancient tradition and connection that continues to inspire to this day.
