Of all the legendary creatures of Ancient Greek myth, Pegasus stands supreme.

Grace and power united in a single divine white being born of the god Poseidon. The earliest accounts of the regal winged horse record that everywhere his hooves struck the earth, a spring would burst forth – with waters that inspired both mortals and gods.

Pegasus is also revered as the divine messenger of the Muses. The Muses - the nine sister goddess of art, music, dance and poetry, among other creative endeavors - have been said to inspire men and women throughout time. Pegasus, with his access to both the heavens and earth, serves as the messenger of the Muses... carrying inspiration from the goddesses to those who seek creative inspiration.

And, if Corinth sounds familiar, it may be because of Paul’s epistles to the Corinthians found in the New Testament – see more about Corinth below…

April's Notes: Our signature thick, luxury weight bezel really compliments this coin's regal look and feel. Like most coins of Ancient Greece, this Stater was deeply struck, and is thicker than modern coins, giving it tremendous depth. With clear wings and an almost centered image, this is a lovely example of an over 2,000-year-old piece of art.

Corinth – one of the most powerful, and perhaps the most strategically placed, city-states of Ancient Greece lies on the shores of the Gulf of Corinth at the isthmus that was the axis of both north/south, and east/west trade through much of the development and blossoming of Ancient Greece. It isn’t surprising that one of the most famed coins of the ancient world, the Silver Pegasus Stater, became a valued trade coin used by both Corinthians and their colonies and trade partners throughout the region.

But perhaps the Corinth of today is most easily recognized by people throughout the world as the location of a small, fledgling outpost of Christianity that was once guided by Paul, through his now Biblical epistles and later through his missionary efforts. Corinth continues to be a vibrant city through this day, with the ruins of Ancient Corinth just three short miles from the modern city – an ancient site that has provided a wealth of information about the Ancient World.

Athena

Athena, pictured here in her distinctive Corinthian helmet, was the ancient goddess of wisdom and war. She is the divine counselor to most of the Greek heroes, and is often associated with the arts as well as the disciplined, strategic elements of warfare. She was revered for only supporting those fighting for a just cause.
