Before the Roman Empire, there was the Roman Republic… where ancient Rome was ruled by the powerful Senate and moneyers were responsible for creating the coins used by the citizens of this rising power.

This silver coin, a Denarius, was minted by moneyers C. Malleolus, A. Albinus Sp.f., and L. Caecilius Metellus in 96 BC in Rome. It pictures the helmeted Mars on the front (obverse). Mars was the mighty god of war and agriculture. On the back (reverse) is a warrior holding a spear, pictured with a trophy, grasshopper and prow.

The reverse has an interesting scene which give you a glimpse of Roman life. Here, the warrior is pictured with his trophy for victory. Definitely a denarius fitting for the greatest military of the age! 

Best of all, it is what we call almost "zero die axis." When these were struck, the Ancient Greeks didn't care if the top of one side of the coin was also the top on the other side - what we call "Medallic Orientation." This coin is one of the rarest - top grade and you can wear it either side out.
