Roman Republic Silver Denarius Circa 208 BC Pendant with Roma & the Gemini Twins

Before the Roman Empire, there was the Roman Republic… where ancient Rome was ruled by the powerful Senate and moneyers were responsible for creating the coins used by the citizens of this rising power.

This silver coin, a Denaruis, was minted in Southeast Italy in 208 BC by an anonymous moneyer. It pictures the helmeted Roma on the front (obverse). Roma was the personification – the representation - of the city of Rome. On the back (reverse) are the Dioscuri, or Gemini Twins, the patrons of sailors and horsemanship, astride their horses, galloping, with ROMA below.

April's Notes: The Dioscuri issues are some of my favorites - the mischievous, charming twins astride their beloved horses. In this particularly rare issue they are clearly seen above the ROMA legend. And, Roma herself is particularly striking in this wonderful portrait. This coin is beautifully struck with centered images on both sides. Perhaps best of all, it is what we call almost "zero die axis." When these were struck, the minters didn't care if the top of one side of the coin was also the top on the other side - what we call "Medallic Orientation." This coin is one of the rare ones you can wear it either side out.
