1715 Fleet Shipwreck Rare 4 Reale Piece of Eight 14K Gold Pendant - the Mel Fisher Cobb Coin Company Collection | Artifact #6699

The 4 Reale - or "Piece of 8" and a Rare Mel Fisher Cobb Coin Company Certificate!

Please Note: This is an authentic 1715 Fleet Shipwreck Treasure Coin, and you will receive the exact pendant in the photographs and description.

FOR PENDANT SIZE SEE COIN DETAILS BELOW

One of the most famed treasure fleets of all time, the 1715 Spanish Treasure Fleet yields some of the most stunning examples of early 1700's silver Spanish "cob" shipwreck treasure coins.

Crudely minted cob coins - short for cabo de barra, or "end of the bar," each has it's own unique shape - and combined with the sea wear and stunning patinas, each is a small work of art!

What connection does the 1715 Fleet have to Pirates: These "pieces of 8" are also the famous coins of pirate legend and lore. The Spanish quickly began salvaging their fleet. But pirate Henry Jennings amassed a crew and attacked Spanish salvage camp in early 1716. They made off with upwards of 120,000 pieces of 8. Obviously, this coin survived that raid, and lay hidden for hundreds of years on the ocean bottom, to be salvaged only a few years ago. Blackbeard was also prowling the Florida coast and Caribbean at this time and drinking rum with Jennings!

Your 1715 Fleet Shipwreck Treasure Coin

  • Date: Circa 1710
  • Denomination: 4 Reale
  • Mint: Mexico City, Nueva Espana (present day Mexico)
  • Assayer: Not visible
  • Ruler: King Philip V of Spain
  • Coin Metal: Silver
  • Bezel Metal: 14K Gold - Luxury weight
  • Obverse (Front): The Florenzada Cross
  • Reverse: (Back): The shield of King Philip V of Spain
  • Articulating Nautical Shackle Bail with a 6.2mm inside diameter large enough to fit a high quality gold or silver chain
  • Pendant Size including bezel:  1 1/8" Across, 1 3/4" Tall - the width of a 50 cent piece

Note from Robert: There are several things that make pieces like these unique and rare. Stunning, beautiful, well struck cross and shield. "oM" Mexico City mint mark.  Rare, top grade condition for the 4 reale denomination, gently removed and conserved from the remains of what was once a treasure chest. Only about 12% of the coins struck at this time were the 4 reale. The majority recovered from the 1715 Fleet were the large 8 reales.

It comes with its original, embossed seal Mel Fisher Cobb Coin Company Certificate of Authenticity issued back in the 1970s and early '80s, during the "Glory Days of the 1715 Fleet." During this time, part of Mel's crew was searching for the Atocha off Key West (they discovered it in 1985).

This is true Treasure Hunter memorabilia - rare and valuable.

Additional Coin and Certificate details: Shipwreck 4 reales in this top grade condition are rare - these smaller coins are at the mercy of the ocean unless they are protected either in a conglomerate ("clump") of coins that was once a treasure chest, or attached to an "EO" Encrusted Object usually containing iron objects that were part of the ship's fittings, and act as a sacrificial metal, protecting the coin from the harsh salt and heavy wave action environment. It took me many hours to gently conserve and restore this coin.

Someone long ago believed in the magic and mystery of treasure salvage, and this was part of their return for their monetary investment probably for the 1715 Fleet treasure hunting season the previous summer. True treasure hunter memorabilia. These notes will be kept with your detailed documentation package we provide, so its provenance isn't lost to time.
