FOR PENDANT SIZE SEE COIN DETAILS BELOW

With the gleaming richness of time-warmed copper, our exclusive Dublin Hoard Irish coins were discovered decades ago buried in a cellar floor. As is often the case, they only came to light because of necessary renovations required work to the almost 300-year-old cellar floor. Held in a private collection since their discovery, we were thrilled to acquire the entire collection – and now present them to you as the Dublin Hoard, a Cannon Beach Treasure Company exclusive.

The Celtic Harp… the Enduring Symbol of Ireland

Upon first glance, it’s easy to see what makes these copper coins legendary – the bold Celtic Harp displayed so prominently on their reverse. The history of the Celtic Harp, and its association with Ireland, is a long and storied one. This regal instrument rose to prominence in Ireland in the Middle Ages – and it is recognized the world over to this day as an enduring testament to one of the world’s most fascinating cultures.

Robert's Note on Copper Patinas: Patina is the term for the green to brown tones that appear as copper and copper alloys age and interact with their environment. Each one of these Irish Copper coins is hand-conserved and stabilized in our Conservation Lab. The play of light and dark across the surface of these coins is unique to each one, and is a testament to the hundreds of years that have passed since their minting.

During the Middle Ages, the Harp and Harper became the center of Irish society and culture – and a talented Harper was one of high society’s most recognized and revered individuals. But from the center of society, the Celtic Harp rose to the center of a nation – and became the physical embodiment of the spirit of the Irish people.

Down through century after turbulent century, from war, to political upheaval, to Guinness, the famed frothy dark stout the world loves, the harp has stood as the ultimate symbol of Ireland and all things Irish.

Steam Struck Coins come to Ireland

Starting in the late 1700s, the Soho mint struck British “coppers” with the king’s portrait on one side and Britannia on the other. Armed with a trident and shield, and wearing a Corinthian helmet, Britannia was the embodiment the now Great Britain in female form.

For coins destined for Ireland, a special design was created. The engraver took the bust of King George III’s 1799 British issue coins and carried it over to the Irish coins, but Britania was replaced with the proud and regal Celtic Harp.

In 1805, Soho began striking the Irish Halfpenny and Penny. In 1806, Soho struck the Irish Farthing. And, they were stuck with the newly invented steam presses designed and created by businessman, engineer and silversmith Mathew Boulton and Scottish engineer James Watt – he of “wattage” fame. This makes the Irish Coppers dated 1805 and 1806 some of the first coins minted by steam press!

And from steam power to the power of a national symbol…

From the beginnings of the Republic of Ireland to this Irish Copper to today, the history of Ireland is a long and tumultuous one. And we can never know the exact reason your “Irish Copper” wound up buried with others in the cellar floor of a 300-year-old house. But what we do know is the inspiring and enduring Celtic Harp has appeared on every Irish coin for centuries… even the Irish Euro coin – the currency used in Ireland today.
