Of Special Note: This rare ancient Roman Denarius - a particularly rare issue - that pictures Janus. The god Janus held a unique position in ancient Roman myth - it is he who presided over change - he was the master of all beginnings, transitions and endings - the master of time. He is depicted with two faces: he looks to the future with the widsom gained from the past. Janus sparks action and the change that comes with it. For anyone on a journey, Janus can be an inspired companion.
Before the Roman Empire, there was the Roman Republic… where ancient Rome was ruled by the powerful Senate and moneyers were responsible for creating the coins used by the citizens of this rising power.
This silver coin, a Denaruis, was minted by moneyer C. Fonteius between 114 - 113 BC. It pictures the Janus on the front (obverse). Janus is the god of beginnings, gates, transitions, time, change, passages and endings. He looks to the future with the wisdom gained from the past. On the back (reverse) is a galley - a type of war vessel that is propelled mostly with oars - with three oarsmen.
