Before the Roman Empire, there was the Roman Republic… where ancient Rome was ruled by the powerful Senate and moneyers were responsible for creating the coins used by the citizens of this rising power.
This silver coin, a Denaruis, was minted by moneyer Mn. Fonteius C.f in 85 BC in Rome. It pictures the laureate head of Apollo. Apollo was the god of music and dance, truth and prophecy, healing and light, with his thunderbolt. On the back (reverse) is winged cupid, the god of love in all its varieties, astride a goat.
