Before the Roman Empire, there was the Roman Republic… where ancient Rome was ruled by the powerful Senate and moneyers were responsible for creating the coins used by the citizens of this rising power.

This silver coin, a Denaruis, was minted by moneyer L. Furius Brocchus in 63 BC in Rome. It pictures the bust of Ceres flanked by ears of grain. Ceres was the goddess of agriculture and motherhood. On the back (reverse) is a curule chair, a type of folding chair used in Ancient Rome and still used to this day.
