Before the Roman Empire, there was the Roman Republic… where ancient Rome was ruled by the powerful Senate and moneyers were responsible for creating the coins used by the citizens of this rising power.
This silver coin, a Denarius, was minted by moneyer L. Cassius Longinus in 60 BC in Rome. On the Front (obverse) It pictures Vesta, draped and veiled. Vesta was the virgin goddess of all things home and family. On the back (reverse) is a voter casting a ballot - more on that below.
Our ancient coin pendants are a favorite of history fans, students, travel buffs and teachers… and anyone with a love of the past. Our Roman jewelry is designed to be worn by men or women will accommodate both large and small chain and leather necklaces.
April's Notes: This is one of those denarii that makes me pause. It is truly amazing how much we know about certain Roman coin issues! (Interestingly, this coin was struck by moneyer L. Cassius Longinus, whose older bother was one of Julius Caesar's murderer... but I digress.)
This beautiful survivor of the centuries features one of the famed "Vestal Virgins" - Vesta herself, who was the goddess charged with rule over home, family and domestic pursuits.
But it is the voter on the back that really sparks interest. When we see Vesta on the obverse, and the year this coin was minted, it's a pretty safe bet that the reference is to a special commission, and vote, for the trial of three errant Vestal Virgins.
(Please note: this information and much more will appear on your customized Certificate of Authenticity.)
Each ancient Roman coin was hand-struck by three people, and at the height of the Roman empire, coins were minted throughout the sprawling territories – even in military camps where coins were minted to pay soldiers. Lost or purposely hoarded, this ancient Roman Coin was discovered by metal detector and professionally conserved for a lifetime of enjoyment.
