Before the Roman Empire, there was the Roman Republic… where ancient Rome was ruled by the powerful Senate and moneyers were responsible for creating the coins used by the citizens of this rising power.

This silver coin, a Denaruis, was minted in in Rome in 42 BC by moneyer P Clodius M.f. Turrinus.  It pictures the laureate head of Apollo with and lyre on the front (obverse). Apollo was the god of music and dance, truth and prophecy, healing and light. On the back (reverse) is Diana - the goddess of the hunt, the moon, and nature, who could talk to animals - holding a torch in each hand.
