Before the Roman Empire, there was the Roman Republic… where ancient Rome was ruled by the powerful Senate and moneyers were responsible for creating the coins used by the citizens of this rising power.

This silver coin, a Denaruis, was minted in Rome in 138 BC by moneyer C. Renius. It pictures the helmeted Roma on the front (obverse). Roma was the personification – the representation - of the city of Rome. On the back (reverse) is Juno, the queen of the gods and the special protector of Rome, driving a biga (a sporty two-wheeled chariot) pulled by goats - see my notes below.

April's Notes: This coin is a classic example of early Roman coinage. It was passed through countless hands - Roman soldiers and citizens whose lives live on through their coins. But perhaps most interesting is that Juno's chariot is pulled by goats! A rare issue, this coin makes the wearer an official member of the "Goat Biga Club", with bragging rights to being the owner of a unique piece of history!

Note the “Banker’s Mark” circled in red. This mark was made by a banker or merchant who was testing to see if the coin was counterfeit - just copper, with a thin silver wash. They took a small tool and hammered it into the coin to see if the metal below the surface was also silver. It was. Just another day in the Roman Republic!
