Blackbeard Era 1705 Spanish 8 Reale Cob Piece of 8 Sterling Silver TORTUGA COLLECTION Pendant | Artifact #3898

The Shinning Silver "Piece of Eight" of Pirate Legend: Buried Treasure for the Treasure Hunter in All of Us... Now in our Exclusive Hand-Hammered Tortuga Collection Setting

Please Note: This is an authentic Spanish Reale Piece of Eight Treasure Coin, and you will receive the exact pendant in the photographs and description.

FOR PENDANT SIZE SEE COIN DETAILS BELOW

This pendant is part of our Tortuga Collection featuring our exclusive hand-hammered sterling silver settings. Each is unique, like the treasure coins they surround. Please see below for more details.

When we think of the treasure coins of pirate lore, the silver Spanish colonial coins of Central and South America immediately come to mind. Next time you read about the great pirates of long ago, Henry Morgan, Edward Teach (Blackbeard), John Rackham (Calico Jack), Mary Read, Anne Bonny and many others, these were the coins that drove their raiding and pillaging of land and sea! Even the great, and often maligned, “pirate hunter” Captain William Kidd used these coins to purchase rum and wine for his crew.

Crudely shaped and hand-hammered, these silver pieces of history are some of the most intriguing and beautiful coins ever minted. And because each coin was minted by hand, they are one of a kind. Unlike a machine minted coin, it is impossible for anyone else to posses a coin exactly like yours!

Your Mexico City Spanish Cob Treasure Coin

  • Date: circa 1705
  • Denomination: 8 Reale
  • Assayer: F (1677-1705)
  • Mint: Mexico City, Nueva Espana (present day Mexico)
  • Ruler: King Charles II of Spain
  • Coin Metal: Silver
  • Bezel Metal: Sterling Silver
  • Obverse (Front): Florenzada Cross
  • Reverse: (Back): Shield of the King of Spain
  • Articulating Bail Interior Diameter: Will accommodate chain or leather necklace up to LARGE 9mm
  • Pendant size including bezel (frame): 1 3/8" Across, 2" Tall - pendant the width of a silver dollar

Robert's Notes: We can tell from the Assayer's initials, and the shield design that this coin was struck circa 1705, and was in circulation during the time of Blackbeard, perhaps the most famous pirate of all time. Blackbeard was sailing the Caribbean and attacking ships until he was killed off Ocracoke Island, North Carolina in November of 1718.

This is a beautiful coin! Stunning, deeply struck cross. Visible "oM" mint mark and "L" assayer's initials. Most of the time on Mexico City mint coins these aren't visible. Amazing condition for a 8 Reale coin.

This is a statement piece, for sure. Sidle (it's sidle if there is no horse) up to an oyster bar wearing this and you will turn heads.

Very piratical. Especially set in our Tortuga bezel.
