Out of the dust of pilgrim's routes come these rare survivors of one of the most pivotal times in world history. Hailing from Antioch (which includes territories now in modern-day Turkey and Syria) these coins, perhaps the most famed of all Crusader issues, were minted from 1163 - 1233 AD for use by Christian pilgrims and Crusaders throughout the Holy Land and surrounding regions.
The delicate, hand-hammered silver pennies, called Deniers, boldly bear the Cross of Christ on one side... but it is the other side that gives these coins their nickname of "Helmet Heads." When you turn the coin over you discover the perfect medieval portrayal of the Crusader Knight (in this case also the King) in the famed chain maille and helmet of the Crusades. These coins are truly history in your hands.
Denier hoards are found along the crusader and pilgrims trails to the Holy Land, especially in Syria, Palestine and more recently in Cilicia (southern Turkey). The coins in our collection were part of a hoard discovered in the Holy Land many years ago. They had been in a private collection until we acquired them. These coins were used by one of the crusading knights or pilgrims, and amazingly, they have survived to tell us their story.
