U.S. Large Cent from a Civil War Activity Area - Now a Piece of History You Can Wear

Please Note: This is an authentic U.S. Large Cent, and you will receive the exact pendant in the photographs and description.

While this doesn't look like a modern penny, this Large Cent was the One Cent piece in use in the years leading up to, and during, the U.S. Civil War. Made of gleaming copper, Large Cents are about the size of a modern U.S. Fifty Cent piece.

This large cent was found in a Civil War activity area.

While we can never know, it is very possible that is was carried by one of the soldiers who fought in the battles and camped in the area. Discovered by dedicated metal detectorists, and professionally conserved and set in Sterling silver by Robert, it is now a piece of U.S. history you can wear.

Robert's Notes: This is an amazing piece of history, and in wonderful condition considering its age. Beautiful clear date. I have conserved it and sealed the copper to preserve its beautiful patina. I find it always fascinating to ponder the stories this coin could tell.

The American Civil War lasted from 1861 to 1865. While there were many elements that led to the war, slavery became the touch point. Eleven Southern slave states declared their secession from the United States and formed the Confederate States of America, also known as “the Confederacy.” Led by Jefferson Davis, the Confederacy fought for its independence from the United States. The U.S. federal government was supported by twenty mostly-Northern free states in which slavery already had been abolished, and by five slave states that became known as the border states. These twenty-five states are referred to as the Union.

Hostilities began on April 12, 1861, when Confederate forces attacked a U.S. military installation at Fort Sumter in South Carolina. After four years of bloody, devastating warfare (mostly within the Southern states), the Confederacy surrendered when General Robert E. Lee surrendered to General Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865.
