ust over three hundred years ago, in Surat, India, a mountain of silver rupees was placed on board a Indian trade vessel bound for the riches of the Orient by way of the Spice Route. The rupees had been minted by order of Shah Aurangzeb Alamgir, the sixth and last great Mughal (Mogul) emperor of India. Aurangzeb was the son of Shah Jahan, builder of the most magnificent memorial in the world: the sun-white, glistening, marble towered Taj Mahal. The treasure never arrived at its destination.
It was discovered in 1961, and Sir Arthur C. Clarke wrote about this extraordinary discovery in two books, Treasure of the Great Reef, and Indian Ocean Treasure. And when the treasure appeared on History Channel's PAWN STARS, Rick Harrison referred to it as "One of the most significant treasure discoveries of the 20th Century!"
Robert's Notes: Stunning, beautiful Top Grade coin. Very few of these coins remain available to collectors. The Taj Mahal Sunken rupees are thick, sturdy silver trade coins - and this one has the detail of a deeply struck, hand-hammered coin.
The beautiful script is Persian, which was the official language of the Mughal court. The Hijri year is AH 1113 (in red), which corresponds to the Gregorian year of 1702. The other red marks are the regnal years of Aurangzeb. He had been in power for 46 years.
Writing the documentary about this discovery with Sir Arthur, and then producing it, was one of the most amazing experiences of my life. The documentary, and exclusive bonus footage, is included in the DVD that comes with this coin. This is one of the the last coins in our exclusive collection - the last coins available to collectors in the world.
Sailing with the equatorial Trade Winds, the trader rounded the southern tip of India and pointed her bow at Ceylon (Sri Lanka), a tiny island dangling off the southern tip of the Indian continent. After taking anchor at Galle Harbor, Ceylon, while rounding the southern tip of Sri Lanka, the trader, possibly caught in a typhoon, met her fate on Great Basses Reef. There is no record of survivors ...
In 1961, the remains of the shipwreck was discovered, and in 1963, Sir Arthur C. Clarke, and his dive associates recovered the treasure on the treacherous Great Basses Reef. Buried among the debris were concreted masses of silver rupees. Flowing across the obverse, just below the date, is the poetic couplet “Shah Aurangzeb Alamgir, the ruler, throne adorner, world grasper, struck coin in the world like the shining full Moon.”
