Before the Roman Empire, there was the Roman Republic… where ancient Rome was ruled by the powerful Senate and moneyers were responsible for creating the coins used by the citizens of this rising power.

This silver coin, a Denaruis, was minted by moneyers Marcus Fannius and Lucius Critonius in 86 BC in Rome. It pictures the bust of Ceres wearing a wreath of corn. Ceres was the goddess of agriculture and motherhood. On the back (reverse) is the two Aediles (the two magistrates of Ancient Rome where were in charge of the care of public buildings, including the temple of Ceres, and the public festivals) seated right on a subsellium (a Roman bench often used during official meetings or duties.

April's Notes: Ceres is one of the most revered of all Roman goddesses for her role in championing mothers and motherhood. The great protector of all things maternal, she was seen as a protector of the city of Rome as well. Here, her strong profile and elegant hairstyle is accented with an ear of corn, denoting her role in agriculture as well. The details are so hard to capture in photographs - this coin is especially lovely in hand.
