Before the Roman Empire, there was the Roman Republic… where ancient Rome was ruled by the powerful Senate and moneyers were responsible for creating the coins used by the citizens of this rising power.This silver coin, a Denaruis, was minted by moneyer M. Furius L. f. Philus in 119 BC. It pictures the Janus on the front (obverse). Janus is the god of beginnings, gates, transitions, time, change, passages and endings. He looks to the future with the wisdom gained from the past. On the back (reverse) is Roma, the personification of the city of Rome, holding wreath and scepter.
