The Piratical Potosi 2 Reale Piece of Eight Cob - The Coins of Pirate Legend and Lore

Please Note: This item includes a black leather necklace in your choice of lengths!

This museum quality casting is of a hand-hammered Spanish 2 reale minted in Potosi, Upper Peru (present day Bolivia) by a man named Jose de Vargas y Flor who was in charge of the mint between 1761-1773. 1773 was the last year the Potosi mint struck this “cob” style coin, and they went to the Portrait Dollar, which became the model for our American currency in 1792.

You would have needed four 2 reales to equal the weight of an 8 real, or “piece of eight.” This size of currency was used to pay smaller debts, and since these coins were so small and used on a daily basis, it is extremely hard to find one that is in this amazing condition.

If you were to board a pirate ship at the time this coin was in use, you would likely have found bags of these precious silver coins on board – if the pirates hadn’t spent them all in port on rum!
