The Rare Mexico City Pillar Dollar 2 Reale - The Coins of Pirate Legend and Lore

Please Note: This item includes a black leather necklace in your choice of lengths!

For nearly 200 years, the Mexico City mint produced the hand-hammered “cob” style coins. Then, in 1732, the more technologically advanced screw press arrived and they start producing what we now call the “Pillar Dollar.” This is the predecessor to our US silver dollar and currency.

This is a museum quality casting of a Spanish 2 reale Pillar Dollar minted in Mexico City, Nueva Espana (New Spain, present day Mexico) in 1767. The original coin was recovered from the Spanish Brig of War, El Cazador that sank 50 miles off New Orleans in 1784. It is in such amazing condition because it was delicately conserved from a large “clump” (the remains of a treasure chest) of 2 reales.

You would have needed four of these coins to equal the weight of an 8 reale, or “piece of eight.”

This coin is revered among coin collectors as one of the most beautiful coins ever minted. Pirates, kings, merchants and nobility all valued these silver coins for their high silver content… they were the world’s currency!
