The Stunning Mexico City 2 Reale Piece of Eight - The Coins of Pirate Legend and Lore

Please Note: This item includes a black leather necklace in your choice of lengths!

This is a museum quality casting of a hand-hammered Spanish 2 reale minted in Mexico City, Nueva Espana (New Spain, present day Mexico) sometime between 1570 and 1598. Coins just like this one were recovered by Mel Fisher’s crew from the famed Spanish galleon Atocha that sank off Key West, Florida in 1622. It is made with a Cannon Beach Treasure Company exclusive blend of shipwreck silver from 4 shipwrecks (including the Atocha) and non-tarnishing sterling silver.

It took 4 of these coins to equal the weight of an 8 reale, or “piece of eight.” Only about 7 percent of the currency minted in Mexico City at this time was the 2 reale, and one with a full cross like this one is particularly prized.

If you were to board a successful “Pirates of the Caribbean” pirate ship at the time this coin was in use, you would likely have found bags of them on board.
