Medieval Crosshatch Cross - A Symbol of Faith, and Art
This medieval cross is a museum recreation of an authentic 12th century Crosshatched Cross pendant that was hand-cast in bronze and worn by a fellow believer over 900 years ago. It was discovered by metal detector in England.
The middle ages were a time of great advancement in the decorative arts, and stylized crosses became a significant art from during this time. Carved molds of all varieties were crafted to create crosses from delicate to epic.
What makes this cross unique is two-fold. First, the had round, banded arms - almost 4mm wide at each end, giving it a wonderful depth. Second, the cross bears crosshatching on both sides. Crosshatching, an art form that created depth through light and shadow, was developed in the middle ages - this is one of the earliest examples of the still popular art form. The simple, carved designs highlight this cross' 3-D appearance.
